Blog Post #5

  1. Where did you find the photo? http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photo-of-the-day/cuban-tree-frog-pod-best09/
  2. Who is the photographer? James Snyder
  3. When was the photo taken? December 9, 2009
  4. What did you like about the photograph? This should be about a paragraph. What I really life about this photograph is that it takes a small frog comparing to the lights wrapped around the bark or what seems like a tree. I also enjoy the humor in this photo because the frog swallowed the light and there is a red beam of light through the frog's body. I also like the colors in this because the bark and the frog are very earthy tones of green and brown, yet there are bright colors like red and yellow-white.
  5. What kind of lighting was used? Natural or artificial, high or low contrast, dramatic or subtle. There is both natural and artificial lighting. Artificial lighting being the lights wrapped around the bark. There is some low and high contrast. Low contrast is the frog's head and legs to the bark. High contrast is the cord of the lights and the lights to the bark and the black sky behind it. Also, high contrast is the bright red light inside the frog to the frog itself and the bark. This picture is pretty dramatic because of the different contrasts and the textures used.
  6. How did the photographer use composition skills in the photo? Where is the emphasis and how did the photographer create emphasis? The photographer took this picture as a snapshot rather than photograph because the frog wasn't stationed there forever and wasn't told what to do. The photographer captured this from an angle that looks down upon the frog and makes the frog seem bigger than it actually it. The emphasis in this picture is the red beaming light inside the frog because it is such a different color from the rest of the colors in the picture and it also happens to be in the center of the photo. The photographer captured this emphasis by focusing on the red light and how much of an impact it has on the rest of the photo.
  7. What do you think the photographer is trying to communicate with this work? How clearly do you think that the message is being communicated? I think the photographer is trying to communicate the message of the humor and oddness of this picture and the uniqueness of this particular photo. I think this message is comprehended clearly because he emphasizes the oddness of the frog swallowing the light.

Blog Post #4- Value Contrast, Emphasis, Leading Lines, Framing, Rule of Thirds, Spacial Relations

This picture is value contrast because there is the bright and greyish sky compared with the dark petals and stems of the flowers. The sky is contrasting with every plant such as the trees and flower. I took this picture from a downward angle so i could get the sky in the background as being bright, with the rest of the objects much darker.

This picture represents emphasis because it is a solo tulip flower in the heap of dark and rough looking bushes and the tulip stands out a lot because it is so bright and has contrast with the bushes. I shot the picture from an upward angle, looking down on the flower. I really like the shadow of the tulip behind it and it makes the tulip look large. I also like the simplicity of the tulip and its not heavy emphasis, but it still leads the eye to the flower.

This picture represents leading lines because the lines lead towards the direction of the rock at the end of the bridge and there are many examples and showings of leading lines in the picture, not just with the floor leading to the rock. There are also examples of leading lines with the sides and the posts that hold up the gate to the edge of the bridge. I shot this picture while laying on the bridge, trying to get the best leading angles towards the rock and also noticing the other lines that could be in the photograph.

This picture represents framing because the girl is sitting on top of the rock and the trees and bushes frame her and the rock. This isn't the most clear example of framing, but you can tell that she is being framed by the trees. I really like the natural framing of this instead of generic and simple framing, and it was a cool discovery to find the trees framing her.

This picture represents Rule of Thirds because 2/3 of the picture is grass, and 1/3 of the picture are the blocks of wood. I really like this angle because it not only follows the rule of thirds, but it also has value contrast. I like the textures of this picture and the smoothness of the wood.

This picture shows spacial relations because the girl looks like she is fit right into the sole of the show and she looks very small inside the shoe. I shot this picture on the grass and the girl was very far away from the tennis shoe. The shoe was much closer to me than the girl and it took a while to focus and make sure it looked realistic. I really like this photo in particular becuase it's unique and creative.

Photo Blog Assignment #2

  1. Where did you find the photo? http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photos/best-pod-june-09/#colosseum-italy_3566_600x450.jpg
  2. Who is the photographer? Douglas Wylie
  3. When was the photo taken? December 2009
  4. What did you like about the photograph? This should be about a paragraph. I really like the scenery of the Colosseum and the reflection of it in the puddles of water. I like how the picture confuses the mind and you have to think for a second about which one is the real Colosseum. I really enjoy the lighting used to make the Colosseum look immaculate and powerful, while the rest of the city is dark and rainy.
  5. What kind of lighting was used? Natural or artificial, high or low contrast, dramatic or subtle. There is natural and artificial light used. Artificial lighting is used inside the Colosseum to create a glow indoors. The picture is also dramatic with the contrast between light and dark of the night time and Colosseum.
  6. How did the photographer use composition skills in the photo? Where is the emphasis and how did the photographer create emphasis? The emphasis in this picture is the small purple light that reflects on the puddles from the Colosseum. The photographer shot the angle from below and made the Colosseum and the environment around it look very large
  7. What do you think the photographer is trying to communicate with this work? How clearly do you think that the message is being communicated? I think the photographer is trying to communicate the message of the majesty and beauty of the Colosseum.

Emphasis Photograph

Photo 5: Emphasis
  1. Where did you find the photo? www.refinery29.com/mert-marcus-do-paired-down
  2. Who is the photographer? John Logan
  3. When was the photo taken? 2008
  4. What did you like about the photograph? This should be about a paragraph. I like this photo because the only thing that is color in this picture is the handbag the woman is holding. I also like how this is a high fashion photograph and I enjoy researching and looking at fashion and photographs.
  5. What kind of lighting was used? Natural or artificial, high or low contrast, dramatic or subtle. Artificial lighting was used. and there is high contrast.
  6. How did the photographer use composition skills in the photo? Where is the emphasis and how did the photographer create emphasis? This is a photo of emphasis because the eye automatically goes to the color of the handbag and its the only object in the photo that has a specific color other than black or white.
  7. What do you think the photographer is trying to communicate with this work? How clearly do you think that the message is being communicated? They are trying to market and sell the handbag and they show this well by giving it emphasis.

Value Contrast Photograph

Photo 4: Value Contrast
  1. Where did you find the photo? inlinethumb12.webshots.com/45515/20437
  2. Who is the photographer? Kier Selinsky
  3. When was the photo taken? 2001
  4. What did you like about the photograph? This should be about a paragraph. What I like about this photo is that the person jumping looks powerful and she looks like she's taking a risk and jumping for hopes of reaching the other side. I also like the intense contrast of her jumping and the bright sky behind her. I also like the contrast of the rock or surface she is jumping from and the sky behind it. I think it creates a very interesting effect.
  5. What kind of lighting was used? Natural or artificial, high or low contrast, dramatic or subtle. Natural lighting was used. There is very high contrast in this photo and the picture seems to be somewhat subtle because there's not a lot of textures or dramatic lines.
  6. How did the photographer use composition skills in the photo? Where is the emphasis and how did the photographer create emphasis? The photographer used contrast in this photo by having the jumper and the rock seem very black and dark, while the sky is very bright. The photographer created emphasis with the jumper in mid air and all the contrast around her.
  7. What do you think the photographer is trying to communicate with this work? How clearly do you think that the message is being communicated? I think the photographer is trying to send the message of taking risks. The contrast behind this photo makes the jumper seem even more risky and you cannot see her actual face. She is disguised with the black of her body but you can tell she's human and shes taking a risk by jumping. I think the message is communicated clear because she is very mysterious and dark while the sky behind her seems bright and happy.

Framing Photograph

Photo 3: Shape : Framing
For a single photo that you liked:
    1. Where did you find the photo? Flickr.com
    2. Who is the photographer? John Salinson
    3. When was the photo taken? July 15, 2006
    4. What did you like about the photograph? This should be about a paragraph. What I enjoy in this photo is the laid back style of the beach and the surfer fits perfectly in the framing of the wooden poles underneath the dock. I like how there isn't just one specific frame, but there are many with the wooden poles.
    5. What kind of lighting was used? Natural or artificial, high or low contrast, dramatic or subtle. There is natural lighting in this photograph. There is a little high contrast with the wooden poles next to the ocean. There is mostly low contrast in this photo with the rocks and surfer underneath the dock.
    6. How did the photographer use composition skills in the photo? Where is the emphasis and how did the photographer create emphasis? The photographer used composition skills in this photo with the contrast of the poles and the ocean. He also used framing with the surfer.
    7. What do you think the photographer is trying to communicate with this work? How clearly do you think that the message is being communicated? I think the photographer is trying to communicate the beauty and warmth of the surfer by the ocean and the enchanting bliss of wanting to go surfing. I think the message is communicated well because the surfer looks experienced and ready for more surfing.

Leading Lines Photograph

PHOTO 2: Leading Lines

  1. Where did you find the photo? Flickr.com
  2. Who is the photographer? Bryan Villarin
  3. When was the photo taken? 2007
  4. What did you like about the photograph? This should be about a paragraph. I really like how when I look at this picture, I feel as though I'm the man in the picture looking towards a long journey ahead and there are different leading paths I could tack due to the 2 different train tracks. I also like how the picture is in black and white and it sets a mystical and dreary mood like its almost depressing or sad.
  5. What kind of lighting was used? Natural or artificial, high or low contrast, dramatic or subtle. Natural lighting was used in this photograph. There is some high and low contrast in this but it is mostly low contrast. This picture is pretty dramatic because it shows the eye moving down the leading lines of the train tracks and has a man squatting at the start of it, almost like he's supposed to make an important decision.
  6. How did the photographer use composition skills in the photo? Where is the emphasis and how did the photographer create emphasis? The photographer used balance and unity is this picture by making the rocks on the ground and the train tracks balance each other. The emphasis in this photo is the man squatting, especially his black hat because it's so dark with the lighter things surrounding him. The photographer used emphasis by making the man seem closer to the camera and it is very lard compared with the rest of the objects in the picture.
  7. What do you think the photographer is trying to communicate with this work? How clearly do you think that the message is being communicated? I think the photographer is trying to communicate with this work for the person who sees this is that they will have to make important decisions in their life and to stick to the path in which they want to follow. With this photograph, the man looks like he's going to face a tough road ahead, and he'll have to make important decisions but as long as he sticks to who he is and follows the right path, he'll pull through and make his life successful. I think this message is communicated very clearly because I feel like it shows how he will have to make an important decision.
